Must Experience This in Cbus

In this gallery, I'll like to share some of the events happening in Columbus. It's a good opportunity to plan ahead and try something new in our city.

All of Everything: Todd Oldham Fashion
All of Everything: Todd Oldham Fashion

The Wexner Center for the Arts is bringing us an exhibition that is equally inspiring and creative. The exhibit All of Everything explores Todd Oldham's extravagant fashion from the 1990s and it walks through Todd Oldham's inspiration which comes from everything around him: Persian carpets to thrift stores to drawing and collages.

Oldham designed the exhibition himself and wrote the labels providing insights into his creations. Every narrative  that accompanies each piece is like sitting down with an old friend that shares with you every secret and every struggle. It's real and honest so I would highly recommend people to slow down and read those narratives slowly. For example here is one that I enjoy:

"I met Helen in New York. I was driving by in a cab and noticed her in front of her wares, a bunch of exquisite hand-dyed t-shirts. I stopped and struck up a conversation with her because I could tell from her dyeing techniques that this woman could do things that I had never seen before. I helped her set up a dye-bed tables so she could produce yardage for us. We worked together for many years."

This acclaimed exhibition makes its only Midwest stop at the Wex so you simply can't miss it. It runs through April 15! More detail right here.

Bodies@Work: The Work of Ruben + Isabel Toledo
Bodies@Work: The Work of Ruben + Isabel Toledo

And our Columbus Museum of Art did it again! They blew my mind away with the latest exhibition: Bodies at Work: The Work of Ruben + Isabel Toledo. I have seen some sneak peaks here and there so my excitement grew as I approach the Walter Wings knowing I was going to walk into pure creativity, beauty and inspiration.

As I walk into the large white rooms you can't help but stay in awe for a couple of second. You got to allow it to take it all in. It's like walking into the Toledo's studio, their process, their creative minds and their thought processes.

Let me walk you through this exhibition with words and pictures but allow me to say this. My pictures don't do justice to their work. The lenses can't capture all of it. You got to see it for yourself. Treat yourself. Trust me.

About the Toledos
About the Toledos

This dynamic couple are the perfect compliment to each other and their united talents are their gift to the world who gets to appreciate it. Ruben and Isabel Toledo's families emigrated from Cuba in the late 60's. Both of their families landed in the city of dreams: New York City where they both met each other when they were teenagers.

Each unique talents are a perfect blend. Isabel has been designing since 1984 and she is described by the New York Times as a "cult figure". Her elegant designs are loved by many including First Lady Michelle Obama who wore an Isabel Toledo Design for the 2009 Presidential Inauguration.

Ruben Toledo illustrations has been seen everywhere from Conde Nast publications to The New Yorker and Vogue. For the past 20 years he has collaborated with Louis Vuitton.

Their award list are many and very long but it's their partnership that makes them so unique and so lovable. It blends in perfection as he creates the fashion world's leading illustrations and she designs beautiful and delicate pieces.

Ruben Toledo is often recognized as the one who has brought the art of fashion illustration alive again! On this large table you would see his illustrations laid out in a way that you can't help but consume  little by little. You got to take your time observing each detail because it's all in the details. The paint strokes, the pencil marks and the few colors here and there are embedded beautifully.

Do you see that mural painting? Ruben Toledo spent several days in Columbus creating this work that would compliment Isabel's designs. Magnificent, wouldn't you say?

Kooza in Columbus!
Kooza in Columbus!

When it comes to the arts, I have a very soft spot. I believe every penny spent in an art show is an investment in yourself. Every show, every production teaches us something. And Cirque du Soleil is no exception.

Mark your calendars: from June 4th to July 5th Kooza brings excitement and creativity. More details on my blog!

Festival Latino

Columbus has an amazing Festival Latino and if you haven't experience this, then give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

What can you expect?

A colorful display of food, art, music, dance and of course singing.  It's a reflection of what my culture is all about: rich and lively experiences.

The festival gets bigger every year because that's what happens when people hear the success of an event. No one wants to miss it because this is your chance to try new food and listen to the most upbeat music. The Festival Latino is a two-day party for ALL the family members. Located in the Bicentennial Park in the heart of downtown. Bring your camera! The city offers a great view while you experience this fiesta!

Sangria Festival
Sangria Festival

Sometimes you have to get off the beaten path to find some hidden gems in the city.

A couple of years ago, my friend Enrique was going to play with his band at this "Sangria Festival". I had no idea there was such a thing in Columbus. First of all, I love live music and to enjoy it while sipping Sangria al fresco sounds like a winning combo to me.

So my friends' music gig helped me discover Signature Wines. I have to say it's well hidden. I But don't let that stop you from discovering it. Why? Because you get to enjoy this experience at an urban winery, enjoy a food truck, and listen to some great music. I don't write about events I don't recommend  (as my friends know very well) and if you would like a quiet, low key Saturday evening, this might just be your thing.  Salud!

Mornings Rave....say what?
Mornings Rave....say what?

I wasn't sure what to expect. I sort of read about it online because this is a popular thing in cities like New York and Washington D.C. but it was a concept hard to grasp unless you just check it out for yourself.

So here's the deal.

Wild Goose Creative hosted the first morning rave in Cbus and they called it "Wake & Shake" because literally that's what you will do. This event takes place only for 2 hours. From 6:00am to 8:00am, people gathered in this creative art space, dressed in their most comfy clothes and with coffee in hand, they joined the crowd who was already dancing to the DJ's fave tunes. I arrived at 6:15am and a friendly group smiled and motioned me to join them on the dance floor. And that's what I did. For two hours. Oh yes. That happened.

It was the most refreshing way to start the day. People are dancing with coffee in hand and people are genuinely grateful to be there. There was good energy on the air. A $5 donation get you to this awesome studio where there was coffee, fresh fruits and juice blends provided by Alchemy Juice Bar.  The awesome author and food blogger, Nick from Breakfast with Nick came to support the event as well.

The DJ was on point and knew what to do so we could all wake up to the beat slowly but surely. Across the street, a breakfast Food Truck was ready to serve breakfast to hungry ravers after dancing for two hours. By the way, this new food truck called Handhelds and oh my....the sliders and brunch options were delicious!

So now, thanks to Wild Goose Creative and some amazing people, Columbus will have their monthly morning raves called Wake & Shake. So how would you find out about their events, you can visit their website by clicking here or you can like them on Facebook or Instagram for updates.

Yoga & Meditation at the Columbus Museum of Art (CMAO)
Yoga & Meditation at the Columbus Museum of Art (CMAO)

I really couldn't think of something better to do on a Thursday afternoon than to combine two passions of mine into one: fitness & art. Our fabulous Columbus Museum of Art has partnered up with Replenish: The Spa Co-op to bring yoga & meditation every Thursday from 6-7:30pm. The yoga sessions runs from 6-7 and meditation is followed from 7 to 7:30pm. You don't have to do both sessions to participate. You can choose to do or the other. Or both, of course.

Every Thursday, the yoga sessions rotate galleries so you can experience and appreciate different art expressions. Last Thursday, I had my yoga experience in the Aminah Robinson Gallery which was very meaningful to me as she is one of my favorite Columbus artists.

The cost of Yoga is donation based. So bring your cash to support this on-going opportunity. Also, if you don't own a yoga mat, don't worry. The instructors bring several extra mats from the studio. There is no need to register for these classes. Just come on early and get ready to be inspired as you get your body and mind moving.

Welcome to a new CREW season!!!
Welcome to a new CREW season!!!

I know my soccer fans are everywhere around the city. They're from Columbus, from other States and from all over the world. That's the beauty of this international sport: it brings people together.

Columbus is not only cool when it comes to the arts, parks and amazing restaurants but we also excel when it comes to sports.

Did you know that our beautiful MAPFRE Stadium (formerly known as Columbus Crew Stadium) is the first major league soccer-specific  stadium in the United States? Yes. Columbus can take that badge and be proud about it.

If you haven't experience a Crew game in our city, you got to make it happen this year. As a girl from South America who LOVES soccer and who grew up with this sport, this is the real deal. The energy of the people, our fans who chant along the game, and the spirit of constant party is something you got to experience.

Columbus Crew season begins and with it comes the chance of making new memories. Click here for a detailed schedule of the games and I'll see you there. Yes. I'll be the one who most likely can't sit on the bleacher and might speak Spanish to the players as they play, and loves to scream GOOOOOOOOL when our Crew scores!! Here's to a new year full of possibilities.

Small Bites

Some plates don't need words. They don't need descriptions because a picture is a thousand words. But you might need to know where to find such creations. For these foodies, this corner is your place.

Did you know that The Kitchen host a special theme taco nights every Tuesday? What I love about it? It's a combination of industrial looking gathering place in the entrance of German Village. Pair their special tacos with a glass of wine, sit at their community tables and enjoy an evening in the city. Plan your visit. Check their monthly calendar to find out what the special crew at The Table is cooking up for the love of Cbus.

A summer perfection
A summer perfection

Summer evenings are meant to be spent outside and I found a spot in Cbus that is a sweet spot for an impromptus gathering: Coppa Gelato.

My friend and I are determined to try as many new things in Columbus as we can and we added this to the list. We were not disappointed. Since this was our first time there, we wanted to do something different. Go big or go home, right?

Well, we went big and by big I mean why not do a gelato flight? Totally creative, perfect to share (or not) and you get a nice selection of flavors that of course, you get to choose.

If this hasn't convinced you yet, here's a fact about gelato: only 131 calories. #justsaying

You'll be HAPPY with these pretzels...
You'll be HAPPY with these pretzels...

Have you been to Olde Town East yet? If you have not, well, I'll say go give a little love to your City and explore. This neighborhood's transformation is inspiring and the community is up for the challenge. Great things are happening here and I love supporting the business that believe in the community. The Tavern is one of those great neighborhood places where people get together and just chill. The owner is always around. If you visit often enough, you get to meet people from the neighborhood and their stories.

My favorite way to spend an afternoon is going for their awesome happy hour (4-7pm) and order their $1 pretzels...yes. I did just typed $1. And they are delicious. My favorite pairing? With a glass of Argentinean Malbec. Sit around their fire pit, enjoy their patio and watch the day unwind. A great Cbus spot for sure.

Tacos, Tacos, Tacos!
Tacos, Tacos, Tacos!

Columbus is full of hidden gems. But when they get discovered by someone or something big like the Food Network, then it gets crazy attention. But for us foodies, Los Guachos Taqueria has always been a wonderful spot. Whether you want to grab a quick bite, or go for a full and complete dinner, this is your spot. But while you wait for your delicious tacos, please take a moment to look around the chairs, tables and art work that surrounds this place. It is unique. Everything come from Michoacan, Mexico. While you are enjoying their delicious tacos, you feel like you left Columbus....even for a few minutes. The complete experience is authentic. And friends...that's what I'm all about: authenticity.

Please note that on every table you will find lemons and a delicious hot, hot, hot salsa if you want to add to your tacos. They also have a great guacamole salsa to complete your experience.

Los Guachos Taqueria can be found in two locations:

5221 Godown Rd. Columbus, OH 43235

1376 Cherry  Bottom Rd, Columbus, OH 43230

Zoe Cafe
Zoe Cafe

If you know Rigsby's Kitchen and Tasi Cafe, then you know Zoe is amazing.  Tasi and Kent Rigsby's know know all about excellent cuisine. So when they add a new restaurant to their already successful businesses, I don't hesitate to try. When they add new items on their menu, I want to taste it. And so I did. And it won't disappoint you friends because first let me tell you I am very, very demanding when it comes to FLAN. I can honestly say it's a dessert you will often find in menus and they disappoint. But when I tried the one at Zoe Cafe, I paused, I took it all in and all of a sudden, I was back in my kitchen in Argentina. It's extremely well done. It's exquisite all the way. So if you are a fan of this Latin dessert, I know you will be as happy as I am to have that choice in Columbus.

What you see in the picture next to the flan is what you are thinking: fried mini donuts along a slightly warm chocolate sauce. Killer combination, right? And this is the reason I dance, I work out and go on very long walks!

Zoe Cafe located at 2376 East Main St. Bexley, OH 43209.

Don't see the flan on the menu? Just ask. You welcome. :-)

Greek Cuisine: King Gyros

I'm dedicating a special gallery to one of Columbus traditional fast casual restaurants: King Gyros. For 26 years, they have been delivering authentic greek cuisine with great, pride and all the wonderful flavors combined. A staple in our community.

Three Dips
Three Dips

Start your Greek cuisine experience with their three dips. My choice were Hummus, Fire Feta and Mountain Olympus. Notice the flakes of parsley, the cuts of sweet papers and olives all adding to the perfect dip combination.

Spinach Pies
Spinach Pies

If you want a different entree than dips, then I would recommend the spinach pies because they are so light. Their special ingredient of feta cheese chunks in the pies completes the dish. I would pair it with one of their semi-sweet Greek wine.

Lamb Chops
Lamb Chops

Ok, so here's my favorite dish. It has been a classic for me for years. And it always delivers.

These delicious Lamb Chops come with their special rice, chopped sweet onions, and of course the two key spices: parsley and juice. If you are like me, and you are looking for dishes full of flavors, then this is winner.

Greek Wines
Greek Wines

A Greek Cuisine experience would not be complete if you are not pairing it with their exclusive Greek wines.

Your choices of sweet white wine, semi-sweet white, and sweet red are outstanding. Not sure which one to get? Have fun and order  wine flight. Whine Not?

Baklava Fingers
Baklava Fingers

At this point of your Greek cuisine experience, you need to make room for desserts. Here is one of my choices: Baklava fingers. Sweet but not overpowering sweet, with  sprinkle of chocolate on top and incredibly light.

Family Recipe: Tiramisu
Family Recipe: Tiramisu

Ask Yianni, the owner and chef of King Gyros and he would be happy to share with you that their Tiramisu is a family recipe. For him, it brings childhood memories when his mom would prepare it for the family. And now he's happy to share with his customers. That coffee kicks in that tiramisu just tops the experience!

King Gyros: 26 years in Columbus
King Gyros: 26 years in Columbus

Congratulations to Yianni and staff for delivering 26 years of amazing Greek cuisine in Columbus. Every bite, every meal I have had, I enjoyed it fully.

If you would like to join their festivities on  Saturday July 15th, 2017, King Gyros will be kicking off their celebration at 3PM with free hors'doeuvre and wine tasting.

From 5-9PM, their Greek night will kick off with Kakias GreeK Family Band and many of the Junior Dancers and the ZOEE Dancers. But following a great greek tradition, the night will not be complete without a special performance by belly dancer Anastasia Fotia Kakias.

Hope some of you can enjoy a different  and special evening in Cbus. For me, when I can't travel, I got to places in Cbus that can deliver a similar cuisine experience. Congratulations King Gyros! To many more years!

Art in the City

You have probably seen the hashtag #ArtMakesCbus and if you have not, this is not only a hashtag but the absolute truth when it comes to our beloved city. The thing is that Columbus is home to amazing artists that share their passions, visions and interpretations in many forms. Sometimes you will find art as murals on the Short North. Sometimes you will find art in a up and coming quiet neighborhood on the East side. Sometimes you would find it on the walls of a local business. Keep your eyes open Cbus because if you are looking for inspiration, you will find it right here. In the heart of Ohio: Columbus.

STUMP
STUMP

"We are dedicated to bringing plants back into people's lives through providing interior plant education, thoughtfully designed proudest and customs installations."

That's what you get to read when you step into this magical place STUMP. I placed this writing under the gallery of Art because plants are another form of beautiful and expressive art.

When you walk into this beautiful place, you feel the connection instantly. You can't help but fall in love with this place. It's harmony, beauty, life and peace all wrapped on a block on 5th avenue...right here in our Columbus.

I got this gorgeous snake plant for my place. It's elegant, beautiful and super easy to take care of. Noah Purifoy: Junk Dada
Noah Purifoy: Junk Dada

Vogue featured Noah Purify in their magazine. The Los Angeles Time wrote a review and so did The Guardian. I knew this exhibition at the spectacular Wexner Center for the Arts was going to be something I didn't want to miss. Yet I admit: I didn't know anything about this artist. And I am a art lover. But because my love for art is larger than anything else, I put aside my ignorance and decided that on a Thursday evening I was going to fill my world with knowledge and let myself be inspired. By the end of the night, I could say: Mission Accomplished.

Here's what I learned about the amazing Noah Purify. Originally from Alabama, he started his professional life as a social worker working in Cleveland for many years. From there he developed a passion and love for teaching arts for underserved children. He had the opportunity to work alongside with several great artists who feed his interest and curiosity for self-discovery. What makes Noah Purify's exhibit unique? His art is composed of the simplest everyday things ranging from spoons, plastic containers, fabrics, socks. The man has a gift for combining elements in a way that works beautifully. His talent extends to the creation of amazing sculpture where the combination of glass, plastic, poetry and photographs were integrated.

By the time you finished walking through all the beautiful exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts you will walk away with an understanding of who is Noah Purify, what he believes in and what he stands for. I can guaranteed you that. Once again, Columbus makes me proud. Kuddos to the Director of the Wexner Center Sherri Geldin for her vision and for making it happen in our city.

The exhibition runs from Jan. 30 to April 10th.

Franklinton Fridays: 2nd Friday of the Month

This is the place to be. It's an experience like no other. The 2nd Friday of each month, the amazing warehouse space on 400 West Rich open their doors to everyone. This is your chance to visit the different artists' studios located all throughout the warehouse. Every month, a a local artist gets to portray their work in the main gallery. A mix of great people ranging from emerging artists, neighbors and Cbus lovers all gather to enjoy a night of music, entertainment, art and networking.

It's also a great opportunity to support these artists as you can purchase art right there as well. There's also a special vendor section where you can purchase handmade local products ranging from soap bars, jewelry, scarfs to scented candles.

This is a FREE event that opens to the public on the second Friday of each month from 7pm to 11pm. And while you are it, explore Franklinton, the next up and coming Columbus neighborhood!

For the Love of Cbus, of our city, I hope you carve out the time to support the many different talents that are housed at 400 West Rich.

The Pizzuti Collection: A Gift to the Community
The Pizzuti Collection: A Gift to the Community

When I read this, I was immediately hooked.

"Contemporary Art that feeds the spirit, challenges the mind and stimulate thought"

I'm going to give you a couple of second to let those words sink in.

The Pizzuti Collection is so clear in their mission, so intentional in who they are, what they represent and how they give back to the community that every step you take inside this gem, it's an evidence of what they believe in.

Located on 632 North Park Street, you will see the beautiful building that Ron and Ann Pizzuti restored and transformed into a state of the art galleries, a sculpture garden and public library.  This family is so committed to our community and to our city that upon renovation of this building, they gifted this building to the Pizzuti Collection. Now, the city of Columbus can enjoy an amazing collection of photographs, paintings, film and drawings. These pieces of art are carefully selected and they bring to our city a top of the line world collection.

Currently, the exhibition US IS THEM  takes place until April 2nd (yes, you better hurry so you won't miss it!) It's a collection of 75 paintings, photographs, videos and sculptures by a group of 42 international artist. Together, they explore issues of racism, politics and religion through their work. Instead of looking at what divides us, these artist explore their work what unites us a a global community.

The Pizzuti Collection also has a pretty amazing library accessible to everyone. Appointments are required since this is a wonderful resource for our community.

It's impossible not to fall in love with our city, take a walk around Goddale Park, visit The Pizzuti Collection, and end your date at Tasi for coffee or pancakes as a way to wind down from the experience.

I encourage you to visit The Pizzuti Collection website since they have information about their hours, membership opportunities, school visits, and evening events.

614 Food Scene

Where to eat? What restaurant has a new menu? Who has a perfect venue for a small celebration gathering? Where can we find unforgettable Mediterranean food? I'm on a quest, on a food quest, to find the answers. Let's do it 614. Columbus is a great city to be a foodie.

DeNovo on the Park
DeNovo on the Park

I have always been a fan of DeNovo. Every time I visited, my experience was always a fabulous one. From the decor, the ambience, the wine selection to the chef's creation, everything has always been so on point that I never doubted in recommending anyone to try this place.

DeNovo is now in a new location right across from the Columbus Commons with a prime view of the park. I honestly couldn't wait to try their new menu and of course check out the new decor which is always an adventure by itself.

And it didn't disappoint!

Their extravagant decoration remains on point. Lots of amazing art work by local artist Colleen Scott whose work you can admire everywhere in the restaurants including the bathrooms. When you are dining at DeNovo you can't help but soak it all in. You know you are in a special place so there is no need to rush. Enjoy that meal, enjoy the view. All of them will take your breath away.

Creme Brûlée French Toast
Creme Brûlée French Toast

OH my, A picture is worth a thousand words. Or so they said. I believe that to be accurate. This French Toast was beyond perfection. Although I ordered this plate just for me, I would recommend saving it for dessert after a great salty breakfast. You want to consume this one slowly. Trust me my friends.

Egg Benedict with Avocado Slices
Egg Benedict with Avocado Slices

Want something on the healthier end? They got you. Need protein and a bit of carbs? Done. This dish was as delicate as it looks but the fries on the side...can we just say more please?

All in all..how wonderful is that we have choices in our city? That we can enjoy a spectacular breakfast, lunch or dinner with a gorgeous view? I can't recommend it enough. DeNovo continuous to amaze me in all the right ways.

Brassica. An unforgettable food experience
Brassica. An unforgettable food experience

It was a cold Saturday morning. I opened the restaurant door and I am greeted by the most familiar scents: oregano, basil, rosemary, sage...in other words, I was taken immediately to my mom's kitchen.

I've heard good things about Brassica but I needed to experience this for myself. I was happy beyond words. Brassica is every bit of true. The food is FULL of flavors. The combination is unique and exquisite. Why? Because you get to make those decisions. For your first time experience, I need to suggest you try their sandwiches with that housemade pita that comes right out of the oven. Then get to choose the kind of meat you want: falafel, chicken, brisket, glazed bacon. If you are vegetarian, you have that option too. The next layer of your decisions include all the amazing toppings and dressing. Your ultimate creation is guaranteed to be a masterpiece of flavor. You will not only eat with your sense of taste but with your sense of sight and smell.

If you are lucky enough, you'll also meet Stanley who works at the cashier. He is not only friendly to all costumers but also clearly very interested in making sure you have a great experience there.

They have a small patio in the back. Yes. You'll find me there on summer nights. I love my Columbus.

The Whitney House in Worthington
The Whitney House in Worthington

I've been hearing the great buzz about this place so it was about time I go check it out myself. As I told the Joelle, the awesome waitress that made the experience even better, I only write reviews about places I love. If it's not in my blog, then people will know why.

The Whitney House is a great mix of old and new. The beautiful transformed building has a sweet combination of exposed bricks, small and large windows, amazing white tiles that goes well with the light features. The ambience is on point.

The next thing to discover was the food. It was a chilly Spring Monday morning so my eyes went straight for the "Adult Grill Cheese"(great name by the way!). So what is this dish? The description on the menu is perfection: crusty bread, tomato jam, caramelized onions, paired with tomato soup. I took my time to enjoy this dish because it was comfort food all the way around.

My experience at The Whitney House was such a pleasant one. The Chef makes contact with people when he is available. Everyone seems to be working in a happy environment. Add it all up and you got delicious food, happy people and content customers all the way around.

Next thing on my agenda? I got to discover that brunch menu because as you all know Brunch is my Jam. Happy discovery!

Chuy's: An Austin, TX Restaurant in our City
Chuy's: An Austin, TX Restaurant in our City

What happens when you combine art and food in one place? Everyone is happy, of course! Art lovers like myself will get to visually enjoy an eclectic art collection while also enjoying fresh Mexican food. Did I just say fresh? Yes, I did. That's what Chuy's is all about: making fresh food from scratch every single day. You can only imagine the amount of work it takes to hand-rolled those tortillas every day. But that's their pride and what they are known for.

I asked the restaurant manager about this amazing art collection and he says the owners love to go to different places to collect work. There isn't a particular story behind each art work but rather a group of restaurant owners having fun while collecting art that speaks to them.

Fresh Tortillas Every Day

You can only imagine the amount of work it takes to hand-rolled those tortillas every day. But that's their pride and what they are known for. Watching these ladies prepare tortillas was fun because they clearly enjoyed the art of preparation.

Colorful plates

Chuy's dishes were so on point with flavors, presentation and colors. I tried their steak fajitas and enjoyed every piece of it. Their fresh guacamole was wonderful as well. Chuy's have a wonderful selection of sauces you can request. Also, they encourage their customers to customize their plate as much as they can. For them, this process is not a big deal since all their ingredients are fresh and made from scratch. How wonderful is that?

Happy Hour @ Chuy's
Happy Hour @ Chuy's

Happy Hour is tons of fun in this place! It goes from 4 to 7pm from Monday to Friday. But the best part? There's a fully loaded Nacho's Cart: FOR FREE.

I have to say how happily surprised I was to check out this new restaurant in Columbus. Families will enjoy it and so will the little ones. Friendly staff made the experience wonderful as well.

Salud Columbus!

I Buy Local, Do You?

Columbus has so many creatives and talented humans that make this city so rad. There's something for everyone. I'm sure of that. Explore this gallery as we discover what our Cbus artists are making!

Sarah Harste's Weavings: Colorful Creations
Sarah Harste's Weavings: Colorful Creations

Something colorful and creative caught my attention on Instagram. A beautiful weaving was being showcased against a white wall. A delicate piece of art. The artist and maker: Sarah Harste. I started following her work. I love the pride, the process, and the careful designs she creates.

I met Sarah (finally!) at the Summer Columbus Flea and had a chance not only to talk to her (she has a great energy) but to also see her work so closely. I know her work belongs in a corner of my house. And I only collect art that speaks to my heart.

Sarah Harste Weavings will be participating at the Made Local Market Event on Saturday October 1st and also at the Columbus Flea this coming Sunday October 2nd. See you there!

Cafecito Por Favor

As a true Argentinean, coffee is important for me. It's more than just a hot beverage. A good cup of coffee means stillness and recharging. It means solitude or company. It means reflection or discovery. Columbus has great coffee spots all around the city. You can find me in there anytime. Probably reading.

Flowers & Bread
Flowers & Bread

I made it to this wonderful place. Oh my. They have earned a new fan. Now, let me tell you why I am hooked to Flowers and Bread.

This is what they are all about:

We believe in simple pleasures: flowers, bread and a good cup of coffee.

Ok, that statement right there. Simple. Embracing simplicity in our city. I have not met the owners Sarah and Tricia (yet) but I know, we are already connected. We need more people that celebrate the simple things in life.

This fabulous coffee shop in Clintonville makes you feel at home right away. And it's truly a home. A beautiful home that was converted into this great coffee shop.

On this day I tried their Strawberry lemon pastry with a generous (and by that I mean large) cup of coffee. It was the perfect companion to the Paris-Inspired memoir I was reading.

But my friends...there's more to eat and discovery. Their menu online is telling me I should try their Smoked Turkey, Brie & Bacon Jam. Yes. That would be next.

But I am also planning on working my way through their pastries...no judgement but they got me at "cooking from a wood-fired oven."

Simplicity, beauty and flavors. You got it Flowers & Bread. You earned a new fan.

Fox in the Snow Cafe
Fox in the Snow Cafe

Weather forecast says some rain for Sunday. In my mind that translate as a perfect time to catch up on some reading. Maybe do some writing. Or just a great day to pick up my raincoat and relax somewhere. When I think of the word "relax" Fox in the Snow Cafe comes to mind because it's the kind of place that it's easier to feel centered. You are surrounded by simplicity. Their white walls are perfect. No decorations. No posters. No distractions. There's a large community table. There are smaller tables everywhere. There is NO wifi so that means you are completely present in the moment.

What goes well with coffee? They got you covered. Their homemade pastries are pretty amazing. Their donut version reminds me of what I used to get in bakeries in Paraguay. Prepare for food comma and a long walk after that.

They love what they do and that shows. They don't have an overwhelming menu. Like I said, "simplicity" because less is more.

To keep up with updates, this is their link to their Facebook Page.

Bottoms Up Coffee Co-Op
Bottoms Up Coffee Co-Op

Franklinton keeps getting better. No doubt. I already spend quite a bit of time there because of Franklinton Fridays and all the amazing art work happening. But now, I can also enjoy a delicious cup of Canary Island (espresso cut with condensed milk and whole milk) while being productive and getting things done while knowing I'm supporting a great cause.

So what is Bottoms Up Coffee Co-Op? Two sisters united their forces and talents to bring a unique coffee shop that not only will support their dreams of being part of this community but one that will also support a cause close to their heart: Infant mortality. Ohio's infant mortality rate is one of the highest in the nation. Proceeds from the coffee shop will go to fund innovative and local ideas that reduce infant mortality.

Bottoms Up Coffee Co-Op is also a fabulous co-working space. The historical building is an inspiring place to get work done. It's original ceiling remains (the building is 100 years old), the industrial-theme coordinates well with the space.

If you want more information about their co-working space and your options, please visit their website right here.  If you are looking to host a community meeting for just a couple of hours, you can also do that at Bottoms Up Coffee Co=Op.

So much history in this one place. The mural found outside the coffee shop reflects the flooding that once happened in Franklinton many years ago. However it also remind us of the strength that it takes for a community to get  back on their feet.

So Columbus, I'll see you there. I'll be the one with the Canary Island or the Pour Over and most likely with a book in hand. :-) Please say hi!

The Heart of the City: The People

Where are people gathering? What are the conversations are all about? What is our motivation to discover & explore?

Jeni Britton
Jeni Britton

I believe Jeni Britton is Columbus and Columbus is Jeni Britton. It's my opinion. I believe she brought some unmeasurable success and pride to our city. By creating Jeni's ice-cream and opening her first shop in the North Market, Jeni started a movement. One where a city becomes ONE to support a local business. But this is not just any local business. Jeni's ice-cream became the face of Columbus, the you-can't-miss-spot if you are in our city. It became what people from out-of-state know us for.

When someone brings so much pride to a city, it becomes a movement you can't resist but join. Thanks Jeni for making us proud. Thanks for making your first of many beginnings in our beloved city of Columbus.

Breakfast or Brunch! Oh my!

When I moved to the USA many moons ago, I was introduced to an "American breakfast." Ever since then I have a love for that combo of bacon, eggs, sautéed vegetables, fruit platter combinations and other baked goods. As I got myself readjusted to my new life, I was craving breakfast with friends, brunch on Sundays and little by little, my foodie tribe was born. Friends know that I'm always up for a Sunday brunch. So in this gallery, I'll share with you my fave spots, dishes, and of course the wonderful people behind those amazing restaurants.

The Guild House
The Guild House

The Guild House Breakfast and Brunch menu stole my heart. And this is why.

My best friend needs Gluten Free options when we go out to eat. Sometimes this still remains a challenge as there are so many delicious meals but no modifications for people like him.

Except...

The Guild House. I called to make reservations for brunch because I have heard so many great things about their new pancakes. I couldn't wait to try but my question was...is there any way the chert could make gluten free pancakes? The answer was not only a strong YES but also they were so organized to make sure everyone was communicated and prepared the next day to serve gluten free pancakes.

Everything ran smooth. As soon as we walked into the restaurant and I share my name, they already knew about our special gluten free request. They were ready for us.

Thanks Guild House for making all of us feel welcomed and for taking such a great care of us. More reasons to be back over and over and over.

Enter the beautiful world of NADA
Enter the beautiful world of NADA

Oh Columbus, you did it again.

This is a fantastic spot and a wonderful addition to our city. Your choices? Lunch and dinner during the week and a fabulous brunch on Sunday.

One of the things I love about this place is the strategic decorations. It's colorful, fun, and so energetic. The different table sizes allow for intimate dinner or large parties. My Books & Brunch friends and I tried their brunch menu and all the options are absolutely wonderful. My biggest surprise? I was able to enjoy delicious french toast without cinnamon! Anyone that knows me understand that this is a big deal!

And if you ask for their special event space, you'll be surprised to see how well hidden it is. Think Alice in Wonderland....a whole world hidden behind some magic wall.

They do have an amazing patio that I'd totally recommend especially with these beautiful fall weather ahead of us.

Enjoy it Cbus!

SuperChefs
SuperChefs

When I read their motto "Art for Breakfast" it caught my attention. I won't deny it. That speaks to my heart as I believe we also enjoy food by the way they visually appeal to our sense of sight.

I visited the downtown location and was greeted by the kindest host and waiter. As they delivery their menu, I noticed the superhero design as they list their specialties. It catches your attention right away and you feel like no matter what your choice will be, you are in it to win it. Superhero style, of course.

This time I decided to try their Veggie Omelet with Hash Browns. It was perfect. The cheese melted and blended perfect with the rest of the vegetables. The honey vinaigrette used on the small side salad was a perfect sweet balance to the rest of the meal.

My friend and I decided that we must try their red-velvet pancake because how can you not, right? It was our desert and the cherry on top to our meal.

Excellent costumer service, relaxed and informal ambience and great choices when it comes to breakfast and lunch options. Two great locations in different parts of town makes it easier to visit.

I hope you enjoy. It truly is a "art for breakfast".

Katalina's Cafe
Katalina's Cafe

For me having breakfast or brunch at Katalina's is an annual summer tradition. It doesn't matter how many times I have gone to this place, it always feel new yet it's so familiar. It's your perfect neighborhood spot. It's THE place for a meal al fresco. I've taken so many friends there over the years. I want them to experience this unique style, the rich spices and combination and the overall relax atmosphere.

This time I ordered the "Mazatlan Sunrise Sammy." But before placing my order, I asked Alex, one of the awesome people that work there, how spicy was the ranchero sauce. Now, here's a good time to remind you that I'm from Argentina. We don't really do spicy food. Alex was kind enough to let me try a bit of the ranchero sauce so I can decide for myself if it was too spicy. It definitely has a kick to it but I decided to skip it this time. But that's what Katalina's is all about. They want you to be happy with your food. Don't be shy to ask. They are phenomenal. By the way, this delicious meal comes with great corn tortilla chips (less calories!)

As my friend and I are looking through the rest of the menu we spied the Mexican Coca Cola. And well...that my friends, all in itself, is an experience. It was wonderful to see my friend sipping through that Coke as memories to Mexico all came back. Right there. In the middle of Victorian Village.

Stay tuned. I'll keep on sharing other great menus from this place because Katalina's Cafe is a classic for me in Columbus and if you haven't been there...well....please. Make some time to rediscover your city.

Like it says on their website, "from a Southern twist to a Latin touch"

Authentic Argentinean Pastries? Oh my.
Authentic Argentinean Pastries? Oh my.

I grew up in a fascinating city: Buenos Aires. My dad loved this city and he loved taking me around for "Cafecitos". He introduced me to great coffee at a young age and as a good Argentinean I learned what constituted a great pastry at a young age. Ever since then, I became a tough audience. Many people tried to reproduce the infamous "croissants" but I'm sorry, most attempts have failed. Until I tried Barroluco's Argentinean croissants and just like that I was taken back to my childhood years. All those years of walking with my dad in Buenos Aires came back to me. My senses reminded me that eating great pastries came with amazing memories.

I'm beyond excited to know that Columbus have an authentic Argentinean bakery that understands the art of eating well. Soon, Columbus will have its first Argentinean restaurant. But until that happens, the D'Angelos families spread their talent and love for good food all around the city with different food events.

Would you like to start your Saturday morning in a different way? Tomorrow, you can find Barroluco at the North Market where they will be selling their amazing croissants, empanadas and churros. You'll find me there happy as the child I was growing up in Buenos Aires. By the way, come early. Last time, they sold out in few hours. #justsaying. It starts at 9:00am. Perfect for cafecitos and baked goodies.

For updates on Barroluco, make sure you like their Facebook Page by clicking here. That way, you won't miss any event. See you there!

Books Around the City

Reading is my fave. Losing myself in a story line is a joy. Turning the pages of a book is a wonderful choice. I'll take my book. I'll call my city. And together we'll spend hours lost in the pages of a book. yes. a book.

Sitting at Mission Coffee always puts a smile on my face.

Knowing that I have at least an hour of uninterrupted reading time just excites me.

A brand new book, a first time author makes me wonder the possibilities ahead.

The One Thing: The Surprising Truths Behind Extraordinary Results
The One Thing: The Surprising Truths Behind Extraordinary Results

Gary Keller puts together the most amazing and simplest idea in this book. Yet. It's brilliant. How do we achieve success? By focusing on the thing that will bring us the most results.

In a world of so many distractions, it's so easy to lose our ways. It's easy to follow others vs. becoming the leader of your own life. In this book, the author digs deeper into the topic of disciplines and how we only need to become disciplined about something until it becomes a habit.

His most important question to the readers is this:

"What is the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything will be easier or unnecessary?"

POWERFUL.

Words

The city is surrounded with words everywhere worth capturing. The secret? Knowing how to slow down enough to notice them.

600 Goodale
600 Goodale

This quote is found in one of the beautiful walls in the entrance of the exquisite 600 Goodale building.

Why do these words speak to me? Because it speaks action. It yells, "be proactive!" Be the one that gets up and get going. Columbus has many doers. I'm sure they can relate!

Franklinton
Franklinton

Chances are that...

if you have driven to Franklinton, you've seen this mural.

if you have  been to Strongwater Food & Spirit for an evening on their patio or supporting a local event, you've seen this mural.

if you have been to Land Grant, you've seen this mural.

If you have been to 400 West Rich Farmer's Market, you've seen this mural.

If you haven't been to any of these places, you are missing on the beauty that Franklinton is becoming. Give it time. Give it a chance. I only see great possibilities.

Footprints

Living life with intention requires a daily dose of pauses and breaks. Speed is not a friend. On the contrary, to notice where we are requires precise vision, open mind and a keen sense for details. Let's zoom in.

Cbus and the Little Ones

If you have not experience watching movies under the stars, then you must. It's a must for me every summer to gather with my little friends and enjoy a good movie, lay on blankets, and just be.

Several spots around the city hosts their own version of outdoor movies but today I'll be sharing Easton's schedule. Last week, we watched Ratatouille and the night was organized around the theme of cooking. There was a fun and free Photo Booth (yes, they had chef style hats), plenty of options for light snacks and a great audio system that makes it possible to enjoy the movie at its best.

Oh summer time is amazing but also a challenging time for parents to find FREE things to do with children in the city. Now, these fantastic series of gatherings at the Scioto Mile organized by Sunny 95 (94.7 FM) is a great way to be outside, playing, learning and just soaking up all the vitamin D.

And who doesn't love the fountain at the Bicentennial Park anyways?

Well now, on certain Wednesdays from 11:30 to 1:30pm during the summer, you'll find different activities organized around a theme.

There are arts, crafts, games, free ice-cream from the Meijer's truck and food options as well for family picnics.

You may want to save these dates:

July 8: Catch a Cloud

July 22: Barnyard Palooza

July 29: Urban Adventures

August 5: Mooving and Grooving

August 12: Summer Sendoff

For more information visit this website. Remember all the activities take place at the Bicentennial Park:  233 Civic Center Drive, Columbus, 43215

Holiday Season in Cbus

It's that time of the year...family from out of town are visiting, dinners, cocktails, special events, sales. Our city doesn't sleep and doesn't stop. So much to experience during this season of gatherings and festivities. Join the Fun!

(614) Annual Holiday Cocktail Competition
(614) Annual Holiday Cocktail Competition

Gather your friends. Gather your tribe. But keep this event in mind because it's an annual event you don't want to miss. This event brings the best of the best together for one night so you can taste cocktails prepared by amazing bartenders in Columbus. Over 20 different Columbus Bars were represented in this year's competition. It was held at Gallerie Bar and Bistro at Hilton Downtown Columbus.

The event was organized in two different time slots so that they could have a good handle of crowd control. An amazing bonus was enjoying some appetizers provided so that your bellies can handle the different holiday crafts.

In the next couple of pictures I share with you the cocktails that I still remember! Salud Cbus! Here's to a great holiday season in our city!
