Bodies@Work: The Work of Ruben + Isabel Toledo
About the Toledos
Ruben Toledo is often recognized as the one who has brought the art of fashion illustration alive again! On this large table you would see his illustrations laid out in a way that you can't help but consume  little by little. You got to take your time observing each detail because it's all in the details. The paint strokes, the pencil marks and the few colors here and there are embedded beautifully.
This beautiful work is called Portrait of Isabel, Matrimony, Patrimony.
Do you see that mural painting? Ruben Toledo spent several days in Columbus creating this work that would compliment Isabel's designs. Magnificent, wouldn't you say?
Watercolor and sumi ink on paper. Brilliant!
The Alphabet (2016) by Isabel Toledo These are 7 prototype working designs in black silk paper taffeta on Mannequins overlooking our lovely city of Columbus and entrance to our museum! The ZenZen mannequins were designed by Ruben and are covered in the same balk silk paper taffeta which the prototype dresses were made.
There are two large tables at the museum side by side. Isabel's table holds on one end a cast iron sewing machine " Mother" which her father brought from Cuba when they moved to the USA. Isabel continues to use this machine which was transformed by covering in black silk paper taffeta. Mother is both the means of making and the process of creation.
